George Bush was well meaning in his desire to blaze a new path for conservatism, but that does not mean he was correct. Just because a “conservative” creates a new government program does not mean that it is better than a “liberal” program. It is still a government direction of individual resources and as such it is doomed to failure and ultimately abuse. True Compassionate Conservatism acts to conserve the individual’s resources (by avoiding state confiscation and spending) so they can be truly compassionate by helping their neighbors. One hopes the new members flooding to Washington believe this premise.
